This pioneer was one of the earliest winners of the Emmy Award. She won for her performance in the miniseries, Roots (1977). She is also well known for her role in Backstairs at the White House (1975) for which she was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie.
