First African American female appointed as Secretary of the Department of Administration by North Carolina Governor Jim Hurd. First African American female Chairman of the City Commission in Guilfield, North Carolina (1990). First African American elected to the Greensboro City Council (1983-1986). She later became a Democratic member of the North Carolina General Assembly representing the 28th Senate District (2003 - 2010) and became the Majority Whip (2009 - 2010).
