First Kenyan woman, environmental activist, to receive the Nobel Peace Prize (2004) for her "holistic approach to sustainable development that embraces democracy, human rights, and women's rights in particular." This pioneer was also the first woman from East or Central African to receive a doctorate degree (1971). In 1976 she became the first woman to chair a department at the University of Nairobi.
