After beginning a career as a teacher for the American Missionary Association, this pioneer became founder of the Palmer Memorial Institute (in 1902), eventually molding this prep school into a successful, 200-acre boarding school for African Americans in North Carolina. First African American female Member of the 20th Century Club of Boston, MA - an organization of people who rendered service and made contributions throughout the nation in the fields of science, art, religion, government, education or social service. This pioneer was also the first African American woman named to the national board of the YWCA. Her legacy can now be viewed at the Institute’s historic location, the Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum, with its focus upon African American women, education, and social history.
