First African American woman to graduate from Boalt Hall School of Law, University of California in Berkeley. First African American woman admitted to the California State Bar (1929). That year she could not find employment in California. This pioneer moved to Alexandria, Virginia, where she practiced for ten years. She later returned to California and worked for the State of California. She became the first African American female employed in the Office of the California Legislative Counsel (1939). She worked as a Junior Deputy Legislative Counsel and later Head of the Indexing Section.
