First African American female to found a publishing company for poets - Lotus Press (1972), which has published more than 90 collections of poetry written by emerging and established poets. This pioneering soror is considered the 'Godmother of African-American Poetry'. She is author of 10 books of poetry, two textbooks and the 2006 memoir, "Pilgrim Journey." She has been recognized with an American Book Award, inducted into three Halls of Fame, and is recipient of the 2012 Kresge Eminent Artist award ($25,000). A documentary titled "Star by Star: Naomi Long Madgett: Poet & Publisher" received the 2011 Outstanding Documentary Award from the Historical Society of Michigan. While an undergraduate at Virginia State College, she was the Guest Editor of the December 1945 Ivy Leaf magazine.
