First African American female to create "colored" branches of the YWCA and the YMCA to provide support for young African American migrants moving from the South into Washington, DC. since the white organizations would not accept African American members. She also helped found the Colored Women's League (1892). First African American female to write a book related to civil rights and women\'s rights. Her book, "A Voice From the South", is widely viewed as one of the first articulations of Black feminism (1892). First of two African American females (Elizabeth Evelyn Wright - 1872-1906) honored with a Feast Day on the Liturgical Calendar of the Episcopal Church (USA).
