First African American female to apply to attend the University of Missouri School of Journalism. She was accepted until she appeared on the campus (1939). This pioneer continued to apply for enrollment at least eleven times. after being denied enrollment. She filed several lawsuits against the University and the State Supreme Court ruled in her favor. (1939 - 1941). The University closed the School of Journalism rather than admit her. She became Editor and later Part-Owner of the Kansas City Call newspaper which took decisive stands on hundred of racial issues (1955).
