Smith County Commissioner JoAnn Hampton has demonstrated a long history of public service in East Texas. She served as a Tyler City Council Member for six years and Mayor Pro Tem for one year. She is the first African-American female to serve on the Smith County Commissioners Court and the first African-American female to serve as chairperson and executive board member for the East Texas Council of Governments. Commissioner Hampton took office as County Commissioner for Precinct 4 on January 1, 2003. She is now in her fourth term and serves as the voice of the county's northwest district. Commissioner Hampton is a recipient of the 2014 Unsung Hero Award from the Winners Circle Peer Support Network of Texas and is a member of the Star of Bethlehem Court #175, Heroines of Jericho, and the Gamma Omicron Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She is a proud graduate of Texas College in Tyler, Texas.
