Hilaire Armstrong serves as the 2015-2016 Southern Regional Chair for National Black Law Students Association (“NBLSA”). In this role, she oversees all business and activities of the Southern Region, which includes the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Puerto Rico. Ms. Armstrong is a native of Birmingham, Alabama. She graduated Cum Laude from Samford University, where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree with a double major in Political Science and Spanish. While at Samford University, Ms. Armstrong served as the President of the Omicron Mu Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, a Political Science Department Ambassador, Vice President of the NPHC Council, and Head Manager of the Samford Women’s Basketball team. Ms. Armstrong also excelled academically by being on the Dean’s List and joining Order of Omega, Phi Sigma Alpha, and Gamma Sigma Alpha. Ms. Armstrong was also voted the “Emerging Young Leader” by the Samford University Greek Community. Upon graduation, she became an intern in the Alabama State Senate for the 2013 Legislative Session working with Senator Vivian Figures and the Democratic Caucus.

REP. SONYA BARNES, In 2011 ran and won Mississippi District 119. She started her term in January 2012 and was assigned to the following committees as state legislator: Tourism; Gaming; Ports, Harbors, and Airports; Conservation and Water Resources; and Marine Resources. In addition, the Speaker of the House chose Sonya to serve as a Mississippi delegate at the National Conference of State Legislators. The state Democratic Party also chose her to serve as the official spokesperson for Medicaid Expansion for the upcoming legislative session, an honor not often held by freshman legislators.
